Getting Shady | Moody Movie Room Shades

We’ve been going back and forth on the window shades. This house came with the white typical plastic blinds. I knew those would not work with our Iron Ore walls and trim. We decided to keep it simple and go with a grey cordless cellular shade. We have two windows so we purchased two!

Here are a few important things to remember when you install blinds, shades or curtains on your windows.

Measure Carefully

Make sure you decide ahead of time if you want the shades/blinds mounted on the outside of the window or on the inside. You want the blinds fairly snug but enough room to move around. I personally prefer an inside mounted shade.

Choose how filtered you want the light

There are several different options for how filtered you want the light on your windows. I typically don’t do black out because we are all late sleepers naturally. So in our bedrooms we like the light to help wake us up. However we did pick blackout for the movie room. We want to be able to watch a movie in the middle of the day if our heart so desires to!

There are typically three main light options:

Light Filtering

Soften the light, reduce glare and work great for rooms like your living room where you aren’t too worried about complete privacy.

Room Darkening

Block most of the light out when fully closed. Great in bedrooms, movie rooms, and really help with heat and air efficiency.

Blackout

Block out all light. Work great in baby nurseries, movie rooms and offices.

Pick your color

Typical advice is to match your shade or blind to your trim. I think with Roman shades you can have a little fun and add pattern, color, and enhance the design of your room! With curtains I think you can do whatever you want and have fun with them. We chose to match ours as closely as we could to the paint color (trim and walls are the same) of the room so they would mostly just blend in when open or closed.

I’m on the hunt for roman shades for my bedroom, the living room, kitchen, dining, and boys room! Can’t wait to have fun picking out patterns, colors, and textures that work for each room. I’ll keep you posted!
